On January 28th, 2020 Venerable Bhante Wimala received a Humanitarian Award from Dr. Eden Chua, the President of the Chairmen of the Local Governments of the Philippines. The organization represents 40,046 chairmen and chairwomen from every region of the Philippines.
As Bhante Wimala arrived in Tacloban city, welcome posters were displayed in many places including the main entrance of the hotel where he stayed, the Hotel Larica. A large gathering greeted Ven. Wimala to celebrate his arrival and then a four hour concert was held in the Asian Development Foundation College in Tacloban. Singing, dancing, and a choir performance echoed in the celebration hall invigorating the attendants.
As Venerable Wimala arrived at the celebration hall, many lined up waving Sri Lankan flags and chanting “Ayubowan,” the Sri Lankan greeting which means “May you live long.” Young boys and girls lined up with red roses and offered them to him saying, “Thank you Reverend” as the parents have told them the stories of the “Rev. Wimala’s” efforts to help them after the island was devastated by Super Typhoon Yolanda six years ago.
The plaque of honor presented to Venerable Wimala entitled THE DISTINGUISHED HUMANITARIAN AWARD read:
“For the unselfish and unwavering support of Humanitarian Aid; And for having demonstrated great courage and power to inspire others with Development; and for significantly alleviating human suffering and improvement of quality of life.”
This is not the first time an award was presented to Bhante Wimala in Tacloban. A few years back, the City Council of Tacloban passed a resolution honoring his efforts and recognizing his Yolanda disaster relief programs and on several other occasions he was given honors and awards by the same community.
